A staple of the Portland brunch scene since 2007, Broder Restaurants has brought its Nordic menu to Astoria with Broder Strand. This charming corner cafe is located on the ground floor of the Commodore Hotel, with picture windows looking out on downtown Astoria.
Stop in for a quick pick-me-up from Broder Strand’s full espresso menu, or start your day in celebration of Astoria’s Scandinavian heritage with their delightfully Nordic spin on your favorite brunch offerings. Eggs Benedict is served on trout cakes; pickled beets are in abundance. And, of course, you can add smoked fish to any dish. Try the house favorite Lost Egg (“Folorade Agg”) for a skillet of baked eggs in creamed spinach with panko parmesan breadcrumbs and Nordic rye toast. Make sure to get an order of Æbleskiver (fluffy little Danish pancakes) served with lingonberry jam, a seasonal compote, and a truly exceptional lemon curd.
Or visit them for lunch for a selection of Smørrebrød, traditional Scandinavian open-faced sandwiches featuring gravlax and shrimp salad or pickled beets and cucumbers. The less adventurous will love the roast beef dip sandwich, a classic lamb burger, or some good old-fashioned Swedish meatballs.
Broder Strand’s counter service setup means the line moves quickly, making this a great option for the notorious brunch rush hour on busy weekends.
